Day 3: Gorilla trekking and cultural visit
An early morning breakfast at your lodge is followed by a transfer to the park headquarters where you will be briefed about the gorilla trekking adventure that you are heading for.
Very early morning before gorilla tracking starts, park rangers get into the forest and find out where the gorillas spent their nights. So, each group of 8 trekkers is assigned a gorilla family under guidance of a ranger who leads them to the forest. They look around areas close to where the gorillas spent their night, but of course they are mobile and will have moved. You will simply search for them until you spot them. The trek can last 1-6 or more hours depending on how far the gorillas will have moved.
Once spotted, trekkers are allowed to get up-close these majestic apes and stay with them for an hour, then return to your lodge for lunch and relax.
Later on in the evening, you will head out for a cultural experience at Iby’iwachu Cultural Centre in Kiningi. You will enjoy a cultural performance by a group of Rwandese, lovely singers and perfect drummers. It is an amazing experience worth adding to your bucket list of your Rwanda safari. Return to the lodge in the evening for dinner and the overnight.
Day 4: Golden Monkey tracking and Musanze caves
This day also starts early with breakfast at the lodge and head to the park offices for golden monkey tracking. You will be briefed about the activity by the head park ranger and then start the adventure by entering the forest to search for the primates. Unlike gorilla trekking which takes longer hours, golden monkey tracking takes shorter and is less strenuous because they are easier to find as they don’t shift their nests everyday like the gorillas do.
Golden monkeys are commonly spotted around the bamboo forest. Just like other monkeys, they are playful and lively, you will have to make faster steps to follow them. After the trek, return to your vehicle and drive to the lodge for lunch.
Head out for an exploration of the Musanze caves. Although these caves are not popular for safari, they are an attraction you would wish everyone touring Rwanda to visit. The caves are said to be a former home of the Rwandese. The longest cave is 2km long. You will learn a lot about these caves with a site guide as he leads you through the trails in the caves. Return to the lodge in the evening and relax as you enjoy the scenic landscape around the park.
